Puerto del Carmen is the main resort area on the island of Lanzarote in Spain’s Canary Islands. Originally a fishing village, it is today known for having three beautiful beaches stretching over 3 kilometers that attract visitors from all over Europe. All of the beaches are award-winning for clean waters and sands. A number of diving schools and windsurfing centers offer classes in these two popular activities. In the new part of town there is a casino and a large number of pubs and restaurants (there are over 100 restaurants on Avenida de las Playas alone). The old town is a traditional Canarian area has amazing views of volcanic islands in the distance, and charming shops and cafes that cater mainly to tourists. The seafood restaurants are a local specialty. Many Europeans come to Lanzarote just for the nightlife, and there are dozens of nightclubs to choose from. The Carnaval festival takes place from February to March and attracts visitors from all over, as does the Fiesta del Carmen in July which celebrates the patron saint of Puerto del Carmen.
